Frequently asked questions
Where do the newborn session take place?
Lad + Lass Photography Newborn Sessions take place in the safety and comfort of your home. I bring the studio to you so that you don’t have to pack up the family and take your new baby to an outside studio for a long photoshoot.
My portable newborn studio includes lighting, floors, and backdrops to photograph newborn images in the style seen in my portfolio. I routinely photograph in homes of all sizes, and only need about 5’ x 8’ of space to work in.
what is a fresh 48 newborn session?
Fresh 48 Newborn Sessions happen during the first 2 days (48 hours) after birth, and take place in the hospital or birth center. They are meant to capture the realness of the post-birth experience and the connections that are made as you get to know your precious new baby.
Fresh 48 newborn sessions are photographed with a documentary "au natural" approach, with natural lighting and little to no staging or props. I like to capture images like a parent holding the baby skin-to-skin, the awe of siblings meeting for the first time, and those teeny-tiny fingers and toes.
Fresh 48 sessions will be delivered edited as black and white photos, but I will also provide you with the color versions of your purchased images as well.
When is the best time to have my baby photographed?
The ideal time to photograph newborns is within the first 2 weeks after birth. I do photograph babies up to approximately one month old however, it does become less likely we can capture all the poses when the baby more alert and active.
Preemies or babies who have been in the NICU can typically be photographed a bit older than a full-term baby, and I am always willing to adjust the session date for these scenarios.
how long are the sessions?
Petite Newborn Sessions include up to 2 hours of time and the Premier Newborn Sessions up to 4 hours. Newborn Sessions all begin in the morning, and will be planned around the baby's sleep and feeding schedule.
Sessions could run a little longer depending on baby. I strongly suggest you do not schedule any other appointments for the day of your session.
What do you bring for the session? Do I need to find outfits?
Lad + Lass Photography brings the entire newborn studio to your home! I bring: lighting, heating, hats/bonnets, outfits, tiebacks/floral halos, wraps, layers, prop bowls/beds/buckets, and backgrounds.
I have an ever-changing client closet of high quality, hand-made props to style your session. I love incorporating natural textured layers, and choose mostly neutral, muted, or rich color palettes to create timeless images for your gallery. You are also welcome to request your favorite colors and props for your session. Additionally, if you have a sentimental item that you want to include in the session, I will do my best to incorporate it.
I will capture a variety of different looks in your session. For each setup, I change out some of the wraps and accessories to get different looks. Additionally, I will capture several angles of each pose to offer you a variety of options in your gallery.
How do i prepare for the session?
After you book the Newborn session, I will send you a welcome guide with some tips and what to expect. But don't stress! I will bring everything needed for your newborn session, so there really isn’t much you need to prepare– except for clearing an area for me to work, and minimizing distractions (pets, additional people who will not be photographed, etc).
What happens if the baby arrives early or later than expected?
I always check in one week before your session date for an update on your baby’s arrival. If your baby arrives before I then, just contact me as soon as possible to reschedule your session on an earlier date.
Similarly, if your baby arrives later than planned, we can push your session date out. I definitely want your session to be at the most ideal time based on their birth date and health of your baby.
Can i purchase additional images after i see my gallery?
The majority of your session time will be spent on capturing a variety of newborn poses, however I am happy to spend a few minutes photographing siblings and/or parent pictures to capture this special time at no additional cost.
The Petite Newborn Session includes one pose with siblings/family, and the Premier Newborn Session allows time for several poses.
Note that any sibling/parent photos will be taken as casual lifestyle images in your home (e.g. your bed, couch, nursery, or wall as a background). I don't bring in special lighting and backdrops for these, so they will not have the same studio quality as your newborn photos. There are a few images in the Newborn portfolio to give you an idea of the type and variety of parent and sibling images I am able to capture.
Do you photograph twins?
Yes, I love to photograph multiples! I'll bring extra props to accommodate the babies, and I will capture images of each twin individually and together. I highly recommend the Premier Package for twins to allow enough time to pose and prop babies in a variety of setups.
what kind of retouching do you do for newborn photographs?
I lightly retouch your baby’s images, primarily removing any scratches, red spots, bruising, or blotchiness from the delivery while maintaining your baby’s character and natural beauty. If you have a special editing request for your baby, please inform me at the session so we can do me best to take care of it in the final editing.
Can i purchase additional images after i see my gallery?
Absolutely! For an additional investment, you may purchase single images or upgrade to the entire gallery.
do you offer prints or other products?
Each newborn package includes a Fine Art Print of your favorite image from your session, and can be ordered directly from your gallery. I also provide affordable and professional quality prints and wall art pieces that can be ordered from your final gallery as well.
This is completely optional, but I do urge you to use a professional lab when you print your photos. You invested in a professional newborn session, and you will want any images you print to also represent the high quality portraits you have captured.
Can I cancel a booked session for a refund?
Once a session is booked, I reserve the date and time and do not book other clients. I can absolutely accommodate a need to change your session date when it’s due to the baby’s early or late arrival at no charge, but I cannot provide a refund of the retainer on sessions that are booked and then cancelled entirely.
